Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend.
He and I were talking about our friends from college and where they are right now in their career path. Many of our friends have gone on to have successful careers in a variety of fields ranging from investment banking to teaching.
The interesting thing about all of this is that it really applies to basketball players too.
You see, everyone for the most part is presented with opportunities (maybe not all the same opportunities, but opportunities none-the-less). The question is what will you do with those opportunities?
I can remember back about 6 years ago when my career took a turn for the better. It was a normal weekday of training at the gym I was working at. I was walking around cleaning some of the equipment off (hey we all pay our dues at some point!) when a couple local high school athletes came up to me.
They started asking me about improving quickness and how to use the agility ladder; what the best drills to improve quickness were and what they could do to improve their quickness in their sports. What was my response?
“Well, it depends…It depends on a lot of factors from what sport you’re playing, how much lifting you’re doing and in reality it’s taught through the proper progression of drills in a proper training program.”
If you could have seen the look on their faces…they were completely blank. All they could do was a muster a faint, ‘oh.’
You see the thing is most people assume that becoming incredibly quick simply means that you put in more time doing drills than other people. While you have to put in hard work to improve any aspect of your athleticism, simply choosing a bunch of drills isn’t going to cut it.
IF you really want to have unguardable quickness, you need to train with the best program possible to do that.
It was at that moment that the kids booked their first session with me. The spent $300 each for a training package to work on improving their quickness (at that time my training fee’s were only $30/hr). Fast forward to now and I’m still making athletes from middle school to pro’s quicker and more explosive in their respective sports.
What does this mean to you?
One of the kids went on to become an All-American in his sport, and the other set individual school and state records for his career in his sport. Is it a coincidence? I don’t know, but I can tell you that they seized the opportunity to train with me right there on the spot. They didn’t wait and try to figure it out anymore on their own. They stopped searching the Internet for some secret FREE program that would change their life. They stopped using their high school coaches generic programming.
Grab the opportunties that you are presented with in life. When you have a chance to make something happen, don’t hesitate, make it special. I can tell you right now, that unless you take the information I give you and go out and do something with it, nothing in the world is going to allow you to do something special.
If you want to improve your quickness, get started now!
